A petition starts to save the Rafael Navarro Barajas mural

The movement to save a mural by Mexican artist Rafael Navarro Barajas continues with supporters, led by musician Sara Hickman, launching a public petition on change.org.

A rare example of late Mexican School muralism in Austin, “The Origins of Medicine,” is in the lobby of Medical Park Tower. The building’s current owner, Chicago-based Lillibridge Healthcare Services, said that the 29-by-9-foot mural, which the artist was commissioned to paint in 1968, does not fit plans for the lobby’s re-model and will be covered up by a wall.

Removing the mural would be complicated and expensive. Navarro Barajas painted with oil on canvas, and the canvas was then affixed to the wall with an adhesive.

The petition asks for the mural to stay as it is in situ.
