Two city projects receive public art prizes; Temporary public art projects announced

The 10-story tall mural on a city parking garage, “Tau Ceti,” by Joseph Kristofoletti has received a Public Art Network 2019 Year in Review award, a recognition given out by Americans for the Arts.

A commissioned project of the City of Austin Arts in Public Places program, “Tau Ceti” is Austin’s tallest public artwork and popular on social media. Also receiving a Public art Network award is “Blackbird” a large, rounded bird sculpture in Republic Park, by Joseph and Holly Kincannon.

The AIPP office also announced the artists selected for TEMPO, the program of temporary public art project.

For TEMPO 3D, installation projects by seven Austin artists or artist teams were selected to be exhibit on Austin Public Library sites during September. Then, during the the East Austin Studio Tour in November, the  temporary sculptures will migrate to Edward Rendon Sr. Park for TEMPO Convergence a group exhibition and public art festival.

The artists selected are Angel-Axioma Alcala, Darcie Book, Ender Martos, Brandon Mike, Jamie Spinello, Christy Stallop, and the team of Michael Mendoza, Jeff Grauzer and Courtney Bee Peterson.

A rendering of “Graceful Celebration of Diversity,” an installation of eight Eight brightly colored cylinders, each six-feet tall, made from powder-coated steel. By Ender Martos, it will be installed the Willie Mae Kirk Branch Library, 3101 Oak Springs Dr., in East Austin.

And 10 artists have been selected for TEMPO 2D. Each will create a two-dimensional artwork for sites around Austin, one in each Council District, to be exhibited from September 2019 through August 2020.

The selected artists are Olaniyi Akindiya, Lucas Aoki, Steffany Bankenbusch, Samson Barboza, Samara Barks, Essentials Creative, Alonso Estrada, Brian Joseph. Larissa Stephens and Bill Tavis.
