This year’s Austin Asian American Film Festival is online, at the Long Center, and at the drive-in

This year’s Austin Asian American Film Festival is a hybrid one. Screenings will be online and also outdoors at the Long Center and at the pop-up drive-in at Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms.

Some 16 feature films and 30 shorts by Asian and Asian American filmmakers will be spotlighted June 4 to 20.

The centerpiece presentation is Mei Makino’s “Inbetween Girl,” which tells the story a Galveston teen Angie Chen (played by Austin performer Emma Galbraith), whose dual Chinese and white heritages pull her in many directions just as her family circumstances seem to veer out of control. The Austin-based Makino, a University of Texas alumna, saw “Inbetween Girl” premiere at SXSW this year. The Austin Asian American Film Festival  screens it online and at Pioneer Farms from June 11-13.

Mohit Jaswal’s “Night on Sixth” will premiere outdoors at the Long Center on Junne 16 with standup performances by cast members Yola Lu and Tai Nguyen. The charming comedy follows Lu as she heads to downtown Austin and engages random people in conversations  that shake up her views of life and connection.
