Sightlines and KMFA launch New Music Mixer series

Brent Baldwin conducted "Mozart Requiem Undead" a massive 2014 collaboration in which 10 composers were commissioned to rework various movements of Mozart’s Requiem Mass. The project was commissioned by Texas Performing Arts and partners Golden Hornet Project and Fusebox Festival, and debuted at the 2014 Fusebox Festival.

Sightlines is teaming up to KMFA 89.5 FM to launch the New Music Mixer, a monthly happy hour series for alt classical music superfans, musicians and newbies alike at East Austin brewery Friends and Allies Brewing.

Each month a different Austin-based composer will share something about her or his artistic and professional practice — an inspirational playlist, notes on a work-in-progress or perhaps ideas for a new composition.

The Jan. 16 kick-off mixer features composer Cassie Shankman.

Admission is FREE; drafts of beer are $4.

Jeanne Claire van Ryzin is an arts and culture journalist who has covered visual art, performance, film, literature, architecture, and just about any combination thereof. She was the staff arts critic for the Austin American-Statesman for 17 years. Her commendations include the First Place Arts & Culture Criticism Award from the Society for Features Journalism. Additionally, Jeanne Claire has been awarded professional fellowships at USC’s Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism and NEA/Columbia University Arts Journalism Institute. In 2022, she was awarded the Rabkin Prize in visual art journalism. For two years, she taught arts journalism at the University of Texas College of Fine Arts. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Architecture magazine, Dwell, the Review of Contemporary Fiction, Art Papers, and ICON design magazine, among other publications.
