Big Medium re-opens Betelhem Makonnen’s Tito’s Prize exhibition

-

When Betelhem Makonnen won $15,000 Tito’s Prize, it came with a solo exhibition at Big Medium gallery.

Makonnen’s “Rock Standard Time” opened March 7, just a day after the South by Southwest festival was cancelled because of fears of the spreading coronavirus. Within days, Austin began shutting down.

Now, Big Medium is re-opening in order to give the show a three-week run. The gallery will be open 12 noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays August 12 to September 5.

Visits are by appointment only and must be made with at least 24 hours advance notice. To allow for social distancing, appointments will be scheduled every 30 minutes, with a maximum of 10 guests at a time. Masks are required at all times.

Make reservations at bigmedium.org/current.

A discussion with the Tito’s Prize curatorial panel will be held online at 11 a.m. CST Aug. 26. Makonnen will join the three-member panel for the discussion.

The jurors are Florencia Bazzano, assistant curator, Latin American Art, Blanton Museum of Art; Annette Lawrence, artist, and professor of studio art at the University of North Texas; and Rigoberto Luna, director and curator at San Antonio’s Presa House Gallery.
