Austin Opera to stage free show at Waterloo Park

'Bella Noche de Música' will feature vocalists from Mexico City's Ópera de Bellas Artes

-

Austin Opera will present “Bella Noche de Música,” a concert with singers for Mexico City’s Ópera de Bellas Artes on April 5 at Waterloo Park.

And thanks to a grant from Moody Foundation, 3000 general admission tickets are free.

Opera ATX is the company’s initiative to showcase adventuresome new productions.

The show features Mexican vocalists Génesis Betania Moreno González, Ricardo Ceballos de la Mora, and Jorge Alain Echeagaray Gutiérrez. Also on the bill is San Antonio-based Mariachi group Trío Chapultepec.

Joining the performance is mezzo-soprano and Austin Opera Curator for Latinx and Hispanic Programming, Claudia Chapa.

“We will highlight Latinx artists performing Spanish-language vocal music from Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Venezuela, alongside some familiar opera repertoire and also some new opera offerings, including a selection from the late Pepe Martinez’s beautiful and uplifting mariachi opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna (Crossing the Face of the Moon),” said Chapa.

The 3,000 free tickets will be available beginning Dec. 5 at austinopera.org/opera-atx-bella-noche-de-musica/

Premium tickets are $99 and include a special reception and prime seats.

“Bella Noche de Música” is first project supported by the record-breaking endowment gift of $3.3 million from  Sarah and Ernest Butler to create Spanish-language opera programing.

Other shows on the Opera ATX roster this season include “Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Bolero,” a South African dance theatre production reimagining Ravel’s “Bolero,” at Bass Concert Hall on April 19. And there’s the return of a virtual reality rendering of Beethoven’s only opera, “Fidelio,” staged at pop-up shows around town through May 2023.
