Austin Opera names principal conductor

After serving for several seasons with Austin Opera in an advisory capacity, Timothy Meyers as has been appointed the Sarah and Ernest Butler Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor, opera CEO Annie Burridge announced today.

Meyers will hold a three-year term through 2023.

A protégé of renowned conductor Lorin Maazel, Meyers is an experienced collaborator in the creation of new works, and has conducted world premieres at Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and Opera Africa. For seven seasons, he served as Artistic and Music Director of North Carolina Opera.

Meyers stepped in to the temporary role in 2018 after Richard Buckley, the opera’s previous artistic director, was terminated for sexually inappropriate behavior.

Also today, Burridge announced an extension of her own current contract as General Director & CEO through 2026. And she launched the Austin Opera Forward campaign, a new fundraising initiative. Already the first phase of the campaign has raised $2 million towards its $3 million goal.

Austin Opera’s 2021 season at the Long Center for the Performing Arts includes An All-Star Concert, conducted by Timothy Myers, January 30 and 31; Puccini’s Tosca, conducted by Timothy Myers and directed by David Lefkowich, April 24–May 2;
